Ambitious and creative design that meets all best-in-class requirements for usability and web accessibility.
Back in 2019, Gentofte Municipality entered into a long-term partnership with Kruso, with the aim of designing their new website, which ensures great usability and flexibility with regard to integrations and subsites. Since then, the solution's Umbraco software has also been upgraded – most recently to version 10, with version 13 in the pipeline.
The visionary starting point for the new website was that all citizens, regardless of disability, should be able to access the same content, information, and functions.
Throughout the process, Kruso has been in close collaboration with both Gentofte Municipality and the design agency Kontrapunkt. Based on Gentofte Municipality's own UX design template, Kruso has been involved in the entire UX and design process in terms of correction and advising on the possibilities for the technical setup. In this way, the website has acquired the most optimal and relevant functions that are technically feasible, while simultaneously ensuring a good user experience.
The result is an ambitious and creative design from Kontrapunkt, meeting all best-in-class requirements for web accessibility.
The new setup allows Gentofte Municipality to assign pages to different employees. Based on a series of templates in Umbraco that define the site's content, an employee can easily create new content without worrying about deviating from the site's existing DNA.
To define ownership and rights, different types of roles have been created, so the content is assigned to the right editor who can insert their content. The solution now includes up to 60 subsites.
Furthermore, a strong relationship engine is built into the solution, which blocks the possibility of deleting links that are related to others. The same applies to images and documents, so one cannot delete elements without cleaning up or making a decision. This helps to minimize errors and dead links on the site.
The foundation of the website is built on Umbraco, which primarily ensures high usability for editors, and a flexible solution that enables integrations with Gentofte's own services and needs.
The solution operates in a load-balancing system with a dedicated editing server, meaning Gentofte Municipality has their own server for editing, which cannot be accessed from the outside. Additionally, they have two servers that are physically separated, which visitors enter, where the load-balancing system distributes them across the two servers. This structure and technical solution combine high performance, fast load times, and a unique user experience.
Furthermore, the setup ensures a secure deployment process for Gentofte Municipality, as one can deploy to one server while the other remains fully functional.
We have succeeded with an ambitious design that also meets the highest standards of web accessibility, where both visually impaired and other disabled citizens receive the same user-friendly experience as the rest of the citizens of Gentofte Municipality.
The entire process has been carried out through close collaboration between Kruso, Kontrapunkt, and Gentofte Municipality. Over the years, Gentofte Municipality has been able to present its citizens with a fully functional website that meets all needs and offers a web-accessible interface.
Kruso continues to be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and support of the website. The next step in Gentofte Municipality's digital solutions will be upgrading to Umbraco 13 and merging the codebase between subsites and the main site.
